Ingredients

  • Dough
  • ½ cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Coating
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Color
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring

Method

  1. In a large bowl, beat butter and granulated sugar together for 2–3 minutes until fluffy.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until dough forms.
  5. Divide dough into 3 equal portions. Leave one plain, color one red, and one blue using gel coloring.
  6. Cover dough portions and chill for at least 1 hour.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Scoop dough into 1-inch balls. Roll heavily in powdered sugar.
  9. Place cookies 2 inches apart on baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 10–12 minutes until cracked and puffed. Centers should look slightly soft.
  11. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack.

Notes

Gel coloring works best because it won’t thin the dough.
Chilling is important for controlled spreading.
Use a heavy powdered sugar coating for strong cracks.
Do not overbake or cookies lose their chewy texture.
Freeze dough balls for make-ahead baking.
